european economics at FIRST by FMD 2026
european economics will take part in the first edition of FIRST by FMD (Fast Innovation through Research in Semiconductor Technologies), taking place in Berlin, Germany, on 30 September and 1 October 2026.
Organised by the Forschungsfabrik Mikroelektronik Deutschland (FMD), a cooperation of 13 Fraunhofer institutes and the Leibniz institutes FBH and IHP, the conference brings together decision-makers from industry, research and public authorities around the trends, industrial roadmaps and strategic direction of European microelectronics.
Against the backdrop of the EU Chips Act and Germany’s Hightech Agenda, FIRST positions itself as a high-level forum dedicated to European technological sovereignty. The programme will cover, among other topics, industrial and policy developments in the European semiconductor sector, the European Chips Act and global competitive dynamics, technological resilience and Europe’s production and scale-up capabilities, as well as strategic cooperation along the microelectronics value chain. A key strategic focus of the event is the APECS pilot line (Advanced Packaging and Heterogeneous Integration for Electronic Components and Systems), set up under the EU Chips Act.
At the heart of semiconductor funding in Europe
european economics is a consultancy specialising in the public funding of strategic industrial projects in Europe. Since 2018, the firm has supported 151 projects across 14 IPCEIs in 13 Member States, helping to secure €16 billion in State aid approved by the European Commission.
Our participation in FIRST by FMD comes amid a strengthening of public instruments dedicated to semiconductors, led by the European Chips Act and the IPCEI on Microelectronics. This momentum continues with the proposed Chips Act 2.0, presented by the European Commission on 3 June 2026 and currently under review, as well as the IPCEI on Advanced Semiconductor Technologies (IPCEI AST), currently under structuring and now in the pre-notification phase with the European Commission.
